Jaclyn Shoub: January 31 – March 2, 2013
In this survey of work spanning over a decade, Toronto artist Jaclyn Shoub takes us on a journey beyond the fringes of suburbia into fragmented, fictional spaces lost somewhere between photography and painting. Her images begin as snapshots from the vantage point of passenger, driving through city outskirts. These transitory zones of airports, hotels, and vast industrial parks, somewhere between hydro fields and lonely subdivisions, all lead the passenger to uncertain destinations. Yet as the image is recreated, repeated, transferred, reduced and painted, Shoub arrives at a hybrid image of dislocation and isolation which serves as a wistful meditation on our passage through these urban landscapes. Despite being fictitious composites of anonymous peripheries, we are drawn in as if attempting to reclaim these familiar landscapes.
Jaclyn Shoub is a graduate of NSCAD University. She lives and works in Toronto.
